Dental Insurance
Many employers also provide dental benefits to their employees
as well. The following is a summary of some options:
Traditional Indemnity Dental Plans
Traditional indemnity dental plans provide complete freedom of choice of dental providers. These plans typically require an annual deductible, that once met, reimburses a percentage of dental charges for employees and their eligible dependents. Most indemnity dental programs reimburse 100% of charges for preventive services such as teeth cleanings and x-rays; 80% for basic services such as fillings and oral surgery; and 50% for major services such as crowns and bridges. Some plans include additional coverage for orthodontia services.
Preferred Provider Dental Plans
Preferred Provider dental plans work much like traditional indemnity plans, but the reimbursement level varies based on whether the dentist participates within the PPO network, giving patients an incentive to use cost-effective providers. Coverage is also available when using a non-participating dentist, but at a lower reimbursement level.
Managed Dental Plans (DMO)
Some carriers now offer Dental Maintenance Organizations, or DMO programs, that are similar in nature to HMO medical programs. A DMO plan usually contracts with a small network of dental providers in an area, and offers very rich benefits to employees who utilize contracted network providers. Since the carrier can offer a dentist access to a significant number of patients, network dentists have usually agreed to significantly reduced fees. These plans are often very inexpensive, and when combined with a traditional dental plan, can assist an employer in stabilizing and controlling dental premiums.
